Louis Sterling Lawrence

Athlete and Boxer
Louis Sterling Lawrence attended Morrison’s Mills School in Fredericton, New Brunswick. By the late 1940s, Louis and his brother Lloyd had begun boxing in amateur bouts in the Fredericton and Moncton areas, taking on the likes of Sterling Adair and Joe Delano. Louis Lawrence and Sterling Adair fought twice the first bout ending with Louis knocked unconscious and the second ending in a draw. The events were described as “hard-hitting affair[s]” by the press, and propelled Lawrence into a career in boxing. Lawrence left for Vancouver soon after where he won the Golden Gloves Competition and competed in the finals of the Pacific Golden Gloves. He remained a top middleweight contender between 1950 and 1955 where he fought twenty-five fights, delivering fifteen knockouts and suffering only four losses. He entered the arena for the last time on September 29th, 1955 when he returned to Fredericton to fight Coby McClusky at the York Arena. He won the title of Canadian Middleweight Champion which he held until 1958. After hanging up the gloves, Louis returned to fight in a benefit match at the Moncton Coliseum in 1977. In 1988, he was inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame and in 2002 into the Fredericton Wall of Fame located at the Delta Hotel in Fredericton.
